Fire brings together a selection of prints, drawings, paintings and engravings that explore a phenomenon that carries particular associations in the experience of landscape in Australia: bushfire.
My interest in the subject of bushfire – an event that carries strong associations of both destruction and creation – emerged during my encounters with the landscape around Victoria’s Yarra Valley soon after the devastating Black Saturday bushfires of 2009.
A series of charcoal rubbings, made all those years ago in the burnt out Victorian landscape, have informed this series, where i am seeking to creatively engage with the visual and aesthetic properties of bushfire.
The rubbings provided me with the opportunity to examine the material traces left by fire as starting points for the creative practice. Charcoal – that most rudimentary of artist’s materials and the one most closely associated with fire – provides the basis for drawings and prints which remember the forms left by bushfire. I have combined charcoal with the traditional linocut process, a process that reduces the world to a basic set of conditions: black and white, presence and absence, destruction and creation.

Following the success of Surf ‘n’ Turf (2013), I returned to Wuppertal – this time with fellow Australian artist Jo Allsop. In this exhibition, I presented a series of meticulously painted studies of landscape that consider notions of distance and our contemporary experience of the natural world.
Having spent extended periods living in Europe and in Australia, I developed a fascination with landscape and the way it operates differently between these two places. This body of work explores landscape’s great contrasts: at once naturalistic and romantic, encompassing the vastness of the environment and its microscopic detail, its denseness and its emptiness, its actuality and its place in memory.
This series of highly detailed, romantic landscapes painted on silver leaf focus on the soft northern light of winter and the uncanny beauty in the stillness of frozen terrain. These paintings of enigmatic ‘northern’ places have been painted from memory and photographic observation in my Sydney studio. Their shimmering surfaces and fine detail describe places of memory that flip between north and south: places of strange beauty that are simultaneously real and fictive.

20 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, I remembered the Wall and its impact on history.
Once a 156 km stretch of two continuous walls, with a heavily guarded “Death Strip” running between, the Wall turned West Berlin into an island in the midst of East Germany. To the East German authorities, the Wall was the Antifaschistischer Schutzwall (anti-fascist protective rampart). To the rest of the world, it was the Berlin Wall – one of the strangest and most obvious symbols of the former “Iron Curtain”. Only three short sections of the wall still exist.
In this series, I excavate the realities of a construction built through paranoia and fear. My paintings and drawings are based on photographs taken by the Border Guards who patrolled the Wall and who shot those trying to cross it.
"Last year in Berlin, I met two women (mother and daughter) on the train. I had just been to visit a remaining 1.6 km stretch of the Berlin Wall. They both remembered the Wall going up and the immediate division it created for their city. They were from the East. What struck me most during our brief conversation was their recollection that they never expected the Wall to come down. But it did come down. 20 years ago, on 9 November 1989. These works are about history and about remembering the traumatic symbols of history."
